概要

The 2024 program will take place from 16 July - 5 September 2024. Applications are now open (deadline 31st January 2024)!

Each summer DESY offers undergraduate students in physics or related disciplines (such as scientific computing and engineering) the opportunity to obtain first-hand research experience at a large international laboratory. Students are invited for a 8 week training period to experience research in one of the various fields pursued at DESY:

Photon science
Elementary particle physics & Accelerators
Astroparticle physics

Selected candidates join in the day-to-day work of research groups at the DESY Laboratory in Hamburg or Zeuthen (Berlin). Research projects can be categorised into different types of activities: practical work on detectors or experimental equipment, physics data analysis, software development, theory, and scientific computing. The students will gain first-hand experience in independent research, working together with established scientists who are experts in their fields. While the research project is the main activity, there will also be a series of lectures (given in English) tailored towards the key topics of DESY research. Visits to the accelerators and experiments are also included in this program. Summer students are expected to work 39 hours per week (including project work and lectures). They will get a salary of about 1200 Euros/month, at least partial travel reimbursement and have the possibility to stay in the DESY Hostel (at reduced rates) during the full program period.

対象・条件/Conditions

Qualifications:

Applicants should have completed, by the summer of 2024, at least three years of full-time studies at university level in physics, related natural science disciplines or computing. Please be aware that the large majority of projects we offer are for physics students.
The main target audiences are students who in summer 2024 are at the following two stages:
- they are about to obtain their Bachelors degree.
- they have a Bachelor degree and are within their Masters degree studies.
Applicants who already obtained a Masters degree or will obtain it by summer 2024 are not accepted.
Applicants should not have previously been at DESY as a Summer Student.
Please take note that due to regulations for paid traineeships in Germany we can only accept students that are enrolled at their university for the whole period of the Summer Student Program. We regret that we cannot make exceptions to this rule, since this is a necessary criteria due to German employment law.
